Web Design – What’s in Store for 2011?

There is a general opinion amongst those in the know that 2011 will be one of the most exciting years for web designers and users alike. I will be writing a bit more about various trends in future posts, but for now, here are a few of the most significant ones.

Mobile

The growing use of smart phones raises the question, should businesses invest in websites that are compatible with both the web and mobile devices? The answer is down to individual businesses to decide, but the fact that more and more people are now accessing email and internet via mobile means that businesses choosing not to have a compatible website may find themselves at a disadvantage as internet browsing and email is no longer confined to the PC – smart phones, the iPad and other mobile devices now put the web firmly in consumers’ pockets.

Security

Consumers are becoming much more security aware when making online purchases with most now actively seeking ecommerce sites with EV SSL Certificates before they consider parting with their credit card details. This in itself is a big step forward for both merchants and consumers: merchants because EV SSL certification should result in increased revenue, whilst consumers can buy with confidence knowing they are purchasing from a trusted site.

Ecommerce

Ecommerce is another area set to change as retailers turn their thoughts to mobile shoppers. According to ABI Research, ‘Shoppers are increasingly using smart phones for price comparisons, participating in loyalty programs, finding local inventory and making online purchases.  This has led to a power shift toward the buyer, and as a result, retailers are challenged to find innovative ways to attract and retain the mobile shopper. In 2011, at a minimum, retailers will need a mobile-friendly presence to remain relevant to the mobile shopper’.

Social Sharing

It’s hardly a surprise that social networks are expected to play an even bigger role in internet marketing as 2011 progresses, with businesses of all shapes and sizes taking advantage of users’ propensity to pass something on to others. The continuing and rapid growth of social networks will significantly extend the reach of businesses but only if they captivate users’ interest; so this year is perhaps going to be one of the most challenging of all for web designers.

Until next time.
