I recently happened across a blog post entitled ‘Do We Really Need to Optimize Our Sites for Mobile Phones?’ and my apologies for not crediting the poster but unfortunately I don’t know his name. Although the article was actually written back in 2009 it nevertheless still got me thinking.
The poster questioned whether web designers optimising websites for mobiles was the right way to go or is it possible that in a few years time mobiles will be adapted to load websites just like a computer.
When you think about it, it sort of makes sense because mobiles phone manufacturers developed their phones with web access capabilities so why are web designers clambering to create websites adapted for mobiles when surely it should be the other way round with mobile technology developed to access websites more efficiently?
I may be way off the mark but it seems that mobile phone manufacturers are happy to let the internet adapt to them instead of them developing their product for the internet, and to me that seems like putting something on the market which is only half developed. That’s like a train manufacturer developing a new train that won’t fit standard gauge rails then asking that the existing gauge be changed to suit their train.
I imagine that the current way of doing things will remain as it is but the more I thought about it, the more I couldn’t help thinking that maybe the original blog poster had got it right. It’s only an opinion of course and I’m sure many will disagree but it’s certainly an interesting thought. Incidentally, a couple of years on and he still holds the same view.
Until next time.
