Unless your website is an ecommerce store you may not actually receive any direct income through your site, but online adverts give you an opportunity to change this. I know you may be thinking online ads look horrendous and aren’t conducive to a smooth web experience…maybe even that they can make your website look cheap. But this is only the case if you use them in the wrong way, otherwise they can actually enhance your site as well as make you some money!
The key to online adverts is making sure that they fit in seamlessly with your existing website by being relevant to your content fitting into the structure of your page layout seamlessly (like a puzzle piece in a jigsaw) and adopting a sympathetic colour scheme (so they don’t look garish and ruin the look and feel of your site).

Takeovers: Advertisers can pay a premium to take over your page for a day as O2 recently did with MSN.
Video Adverts:These are becoming more popular and you can also add them to existing video content.
Mobile ads and ads for iphone: The coming force of online ads as Smartphone’s will soon be used more than desktop PC’s. Also a very cheap method.
Contextual links: These can be placed anywhere within your site and usually link to an advertisers website.
Pay per click:Text based ads designed to be alternate suggestions to whatever search results you’re displaying. Make these ads relevant in order to make money!
New formats: Two standard formats launched this year: half page ads and bellybands. There is an increase in these sorts of ads which function like mini websites.
